Veganuary: Eating at Coffee Shops as a Vegan

Happy Veganuary everyone! Whether you're already vegan, are trying it for January or are simply looking to reduce your animal product intake, I hope 2019 is good to you.
Admittedly, one of the biggest challenges in becoming vegan is knowing where you can eat at when eating out, and what is actually vegan! That being said, it is becoming easier than ever to confidently order vegan food, and lots of restaurants, coffee shops and the like are becoming a lot more attuned and many even have designated vegan menus. Remember if you're ever unsure, just ask someone that works there and they should be able to help! This post is going to focus on specifically eating and drinking at coffee shops that have chains in the UK; however, I am planning on other posts about eating at restaurants and will post them soon!

Starbucks
Drinks: The majority of drinks are vegan when made with any of the plant milks available (usually coconut, soya, almond) including:

  • Americano
  • Latte
  • Mocha
  • Cappuccino
  • Hot chocolate
  • Iced tea /regular tea.
Their chai latte is NOT VEGAN. I can't find any information on their website, however I believe that the Hazelnut, Vanilla, Caramel, Peppermint, Raspberry, and Toffee syrups are vegan. The caramel one ISN'T, though.

The chocolate and raspberry cake may be small but it has so much flavour and could most likely please even the most cynical of non-vegans
Food:

  • Five grain porridge (it's made with coconut and soya milk!)
  • Vegan winter sandwich (spiced butternut squash and carrot)
  • Falafel and slaw wrap
  • Chocolate and raspberry cake
  • There's rumoured to be a chocolate and hazelnut bar that's also safe for vegans, however I can't find it listed on their website and I've never seen it in person

Costa Coffee
Drinks: The vast majority of drinks are vegan when ordered with soya or coconut milk including:
  • Latte
  • Flat white
  • Mocha
  • Cappuccino
  • Tea / iced tea
  •  Frostinos: including chocolate, strawberry, mint choc chip, and coffee.
The milk whips can't be made vegan. Make sure nothing you order comes with cream or marshmallows. Syrups wise, all are vegan except marshmallow and and caramel fudge (and bonfire spice during the autumn months), so knock yourself out!
✭The coconut milk contains soya, so avoid if you're intolerant/allergic.

Mint choc chip iced drink (made with coconut milk) and the bean and sweet potato wrap

Food:
  • Chipotle bean and sweet potato wrap (gluten free!)
  • Sticky toffee and pecan cookie
  • Oaty jam bake
  • Gluten free mince pies (during Christmas, regular ones AREN'T vegan)
  • Tomato and Basil / Spiced Parsnip soup
  • Red thai curry pot
  • Fruit pot, mango slices

Caffe Nero
Drinks: Again, when made with soya/coconut milk, the following are vegan:
  • Latte
  • Mocha
  • Cappuccino
  • Tea
  • Hot chocolate (no whipped cream or sprinkles/marshmallows)
  • Herbal/fruit tea
All the syrups are vegan. On a separate note, they make their coffee with 2 shots, so if you don't like strong coffee ask for it milder.

Tomato and pesto toasties, with a coconut mocha and a coconut flat white

Food:
  • Falafel and Houmous flatbread
  • Sundried tomato and pesto toastie (This has vegan cheese in it and it's AMAZING and a really good way of trying vegan cheese for the first time if you're unsure!)
  • Orzo pasta with Mediterranean veg
  • Mince pie (around Christmas time)
  • Apple and Blackcurrant crumble bar (This is a packaged one, not with the ones in the cabinet!)

Pret A Manger
(Their website is very useful and allows you to filter by vegan!)
Drinks:
  • Black americano
  • Black filter coffee
  • Coconut Creme Brulee/Gingerbread/Regular Latte
  • Coconut regular/mint/orange hot chocolate
  • Espresso
  • Fennel and Mint tea
  • Peppermint Peace
  • Coconut Flat White
  • Coconut Mocha
  • Rooibos Cacao
  • Tropical Green Tea
  • Tumeric Tonic
  • White matcha oolong
The iced latte is also vegan if made with coconut milk. They use paper straws too which is a plus for saving the environment!

Food: For some reason, the website is currently showing as there being no main vegan food options, which is odd. I have listed the past options that we have found in the shop, the last time I was in there was late December so I don't see why this would have changed! Some of these are only available in the Veggie Pret's in London.

This cookie is the nicest one I have ever eaten, for real

  • Edamame beans
  • Soup: Every day there is a different vegan soup (labelled with a green sticker), these range from tomato to carrot and coriander
  • Breakfast bowls, such as acai & almond butter / mango and banana
  • Dairy free bircher (yogurt and granola)
  • Porridge
  • Flatbread (note: the bread rolls contain MILK and are NOT SUITABLE)
  • Sandwiches: Curried chickpea and mango chutney; super green and reds (avocado, peppers, olives)
  • Baguettes: Artichoke, olives and tapenade; avo, olives and toms
  • Wraps: Avocado & chipotle chickpeas; chakalaka wrap; falafel, avocado and chipotle flat bread; grilled artichoke and olive tapenade flat bread; humous & crunchy veg wrap; mexican avocado flatbread; vegan chilli flat bread
  • Salads: Falafel mezze; sweet potato falafel and smash beets veggie box; avo & super greens veggie pot
  • Apple and almond butter bowl
  • Chocolate dairy-free coconut bite
  • Dairy free chocolate chai/coconut pot
  • Dark chocolate and Almond cookie (these are AMAZING but they sometimes stop selling them to work on the recipe)
  • Mango chia pot
I hope this was useful and that it makes it easier to enjoy a coffee out somewhere, happy 2019!
