Veganuary: Gregg's Vegan Sausage Roll - is it worth the hype?
If you've been on any form of social media over the last couple of days, you'll know about the controversy this new Greggs product has caused. Angry people on Facebook are raging over how we dare 'steal their food' as if a cylinder is somehow a trademarked shape purely reserved for meat products. However, it's also made a lot of people happy, and has sold out incredibly quickly in most shops! But is it worth the hype?
I decided to venture out of my flat (a rare occurrence during exam season, I know) and try it for myself!
For some reason, the vegan rolls aren't sold in every Greggs store (Bury St Edmunds, I'm looking at you), so be sure to check here to see where the nearest one to you is! With both Loughborough town centre stores being on the list, I set out a little earlier than I would usually as according to Facebook they often sell out before noon.
Thankfully, there were some in the first store I went to! They were selling them for £1 to take away or £1.20 to eat in; I'm not sure if these prices will differ elsewhere. They're also taking cross-contamination very seriously; one store even refused to sell them as they didn't have the correct tongs.
The verdict? It. Is. Amazing!
I'll give it to Greggs, they have really outdone themselves here. The pastry tastes the same as the one you know and love, and the Quorn filling isn't just a vegan sausage you could buy in the supermarket just whacked in some pastry. It's been flavoured well and I assume it has the same texture as a meat one.
The only negative feedback I have is that it is a little salty, but it's supposed to be a treat so as long as you don't literally live on them you'll be fine. Overall, it's the perfect vegan comfort food we've wanted for ages, so if you have a participating store near you I would check them out ASAP!

Here they are in the top right, note how they have their own tray and tongs! |

It's hard to believe this tiny lad is the reason twitter blew up the other day but apparently sausage rolls can be controversial |
