Veganuary: Turning Quorn ham into bacon?

I popped into my local Sainsbury's at the weekend to check out their new Veganuary stock. Sadly, there was no vegan bacon or gardien products, but there were lots of discounts and a whole shelf labelled Veganuary! The vegan ham style slices were on offer for a pound, and I remembered people saying you could fry it and use it as bacon - so I decided to put this to the test.

Make sure you get the ones labelled vegan as there are similar non-vegan ones!

If I'm honest, I'm not really a fan of this normally - I much prefer the tofurky slices that Sainsbury's also sell in the same section. However, I really wanted to try frying this and putting it to the test!

I put a small amount of vegetable oil in a frying pan and cooked them on high for a few minutes on each side, until they turned crispy.

It might not be the traditional shape but they crisped up well!

I decided to try this in a 'traditional' bacon sandwich.

And it worked!!
If you didn't know this was originally a ham product, you wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't originally intended to be bacon. It had a similar taste and texture to how I remember vegetarian Quorn bacon (sadly, that contains egg) tasting. And, at a lower price than other vegan bacon, especially now while it's on offer in Sainsbury's, this 'hack' saves a bit of money too! Overall, I would say this was a success!
