Vegan cheese and marmite scrolls
If you love the Papa John's version of these and want to make your own, look no further! These scrolls are the perfect comfort snack - the soft bread goes perfectly with the marmite and vegan cheese!
The beauty of these is you can use whatever vegan cheese is your favourite; for these ones, I used the applewood one! You could also use Violife, a supermarket own brand or if you want it to be really like the takeaway version, try using Sheese.
These are super easy to make too - you only need a quick 5 minute rise for the yeast at the beginning, and a quick need before you make the shape of the scrolls.
If you're really adverse to Marmite, you could always swap it for tomato sauce to make pizza scrolls!
This made around 30 scrolls, and took around 40 minutes to make.
Ingredients
- 500g plain flour plus extra for dusting
- 7g fast action yeast
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 330ml warm water
- Marmite or other yeast extract
- ~100g vegan cheese, grated
- Preheat the oven to 180°C
- In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, salt, yeast and warm water. Leave for 5 minutes
- Stir the mixture until a dough forms
- On a floured chopping board, knead the dough for about 5 minutes
- Twist to break off small pieces of dough. Roll into a 'sausage shape' with your hands and then flatten it so you have a long, flat pieces of dough
- Spread some marmite along the dough and then sprinkle some cheese on top
- Roll the dough into a spiral and place on a lined baking tray (top tip: you can always use a cupcake tray instead so the scrolls keep their shape better!)
- Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. A good way of telling they're done is by giving them a tap underneath and seeing if it sounds hollow - if it does, they're probably done!
